Transactions in ePAWS 2.0
Transactions in ePAWS 2.0 are initiated by department administrators, research administrators, or principal investigators at the department/unit level and routed through the system to NU-RES Research Administration (NU-RES RA) for review, processing, and submission to the funding agency as applicable.
What Is a Transaction?
A transaction is any discrete action or submission associated with a proposal or award record, spanning the full lifecycle from proposal submission through closeout. This guide covers the most common transactions routed to NU-RES RA and the information that may be required for each.
Please note: This guide does not cover the following, which are processed via eCLAWS:
- Award agreements not directly arising from ePAWS 2.0 transaction that require institutional signature.
- Incoming amendments that obligate or de-obligate funds requiring signature.
- Unfunded agreements requiring modification (e.g., NDA, MOU, DUA, Unfunded Collaboration Agreements); department administrators/PIs should submit an eCLAWS request to initiate an unfunded agreement modification.
If you are unsure whether an action belongs in ePAWs or eCLAWs, please contact your Transaction Grant Officer for guidance before proceeding.

General Guidelines:
- Review award terms to determine required documentation and/or prior approval requirements, as requirements vary by funding agency.
- Include detailed justification – use formal language appropriate for agency submissions.
- Upload all required documentation at the time of submission to avoid delays in processing.
- When in doubt, submit the transaction – if unsure whether prior approval is needed, NU-RES RA will review and advise.
- Prepare formal letters when needed – for prior approval requests, it is best practice to prepare a formal letter addressed to the funding agency outlining the justification for the request and attach in Word format when routing to NU-RES RA.
- Complete all necessary forms to the best of your ability.
